The iPhone 6 camera has certainly brought some important improvements, but one thing that people seems didn’t quite understand is what the iPhone 6 camera has a bulge, a protruding part at the back, what isn’t is flat as with the previous iPhone devices?
I have to admit that I was quite surprised myself to see that bulge at the back of the iPhone 6. As we know Apple, it gives a big deal of importance to the product design. When you visit Apple’s official website, you can see that even at the iPhone 6 product page, the bulge in the image was removed when showing the two iPhones from the side.
In other image on the iPhone 6 product page you can see the bulge when viewed from an angle. Even in the press release image media pages it only shows the iPhone 6 in its pretty side. By the way, in the press event, Apple actually showed the size comparison with images that has the bulge, you can check this photo here.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus both are slimmer than the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 6 has 7.1mm thick and the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1mm thick. Apple continues the same trend every year and reduces the thickness of the device by a few fractions of a millimeter. Having a slimmer device is always great because it’s less protruding in the pocket, looks cool and easy to handle.
I assume that the reason that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have that protruding part is due to lack of internal space in the top-left area of the phone. I didn’t open it up of course, but I assume that the optical design of that particular lens and the other relevant parts, take more vertical space than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 and 6+ both use the same sensor size and I assume that the optical design of the lens wasn’t changed either, as it’s still is 29mm equivalent focal length.
I assume that in order to solve this, Apple would probably should have ask its partners to design a new camera. This would probably costs much more to make, and obviously going with the same optical construction was the cheapest way to go. I just assume here obviously, but it seems like it.
Another question was raised by some people asking why the LG G3 amd Sony Xperia Z3 don’t have this bulge, and many other phone do not? — That’s certainly a good question that we still don’t have an answer to yet.
A cool video by PerlpateticPandas shows you how to fix the iPhone 6 protruding camera (don’t try that at home). Beware, funny video!
Funny isn’t it . I can understand its frustration, he really wanted his camera to look perfect and polished, but he probably took it a bit out of protrusion, I mean proportion.
The size of the iPhone 6 protrusion is around 0.03 inches. It seems like people are searching hard to find any flaws with the “perfect” phone on earth. This one also joins the iPhone 6 Plus bending “issue”. Should this bother you, not at all, but I’m sure that Apple certainly followed the reaction of the community and it’s unlikely that we’ll see a protruding camera on the iPhone 7 next year.
