Google Nexus 6P Sensor Size

October 6, 2015

Both the Google Nexus 6P and 5X feature a Sony 1/2.3″ size image sensor. 1/2.3-inch sensors are very common in conventional compact cameras, but not in mobile phones. The actual size of the light sensitive area is 6.17 by 4.55 mm. In comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus uses a 1/3″ (4.80 x 3.60 mm) size sensor, the Nokia Lumia 1520 uses a 1/2.5″ (5.76 x 4.29 mm) and the LG G4 has a 1/2.6″ (5.79 mm x 4.01 mm).

So in comparison to many of the camera phones on the market, 1/2.3″ sensor is relatively large.  the Sony IMX377 Exmor R sensor has 7.81 mm diagonal length size, 4:3 aspect ratio and 4000 x 3000 effective resolution for 4:3 aspect ratio images.

For a given resolution, a larger sensor means larger pixels. This is why that even with 12.3MP resolution, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X sensors have relatively large pixels, 1.55 microns.
