Sony launches the Z5 in three different flavors, the Xperia Z5 compact, Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium. Although the three vary by their specs, they all use the same camera specs.

The Sony Xperia Z5 has a really impressive camera specs. The Z5 isn’t revolutionary, but does come with camera features that we can expect a high-end smartphone to have. The most interesting feature is the Hybrid Autofocus system. This AF system utilizes both contrast-detection and phase-detection AF technologies to make focus super fast and accurate, especially when capturing moving subjects.

The Z5 camera is listed as 23MP resolution in the specs, but its 1/2.3″ Exmor RS sensor actually has 25MP resolution, but the output is limited to 23MP for photos taken with 4:3 aspect ratio or 20MP for photos taken in 16:9 aspect ratio. Besides the sensor, the Z5 rear facing camera uses a 24mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.0 Sony G lens, a bright and sharp lens. The front-facing camera is 5MP and features a 25mm (35mm equivalent) lens.

So the Xperia Z5 camera doesn’t offer anything revolutionary, but it’s boasts the latest standard features that you can expect to have in a smartphone at this price range.

To be honest, I expected more from Sony, especially considering the new iPhone is on its way. I am interested to see what Apple gonna come up with next. The true revolution in mobile digital imaging is yet to come. There are new technologies that are still under development and it might take several years until we see phones utilizing them.

Sony continues to use the Exmor RS stacked-sensor that is already highly invested in. We can expect more and more phones to use this type of sensorĀ  as it’s indeed gives excellent results, especially in low-light.

All in all, good camera specs that will help you capture beautiful photos with little effort, even under restricted lighting conditions.
